Monday Quiz 42 - Superstition Dying Out?

During this week last year (Apr 7 to Apr 13, 2007), the Iona Institute published a survey of Irish awareness of Christian teaching. For each of the following questions, do you know (a) the answer and (b) how many people got it right?
- Name the Holy Trinity.
- How many Gospels are there in the New Testament?
- What is the First Commandment?
- What name is given to the changing of the body and blood of Christ in the Mass?
- What is meant by the immaculate conception?

Answers
- Father, Son, Holy Ghost. Only 64% of Irish people knew this, including only 47% of under-25s.
- Four. Only 55% of Irish people knew this, including only 38% of under-25s.
- I am the Lord your God, you shall not put other Gods before me. Only 25% of Irish people knew this, including only 5% of under-25s.
- Transubstantiation. Only 19% of Irish people knew this, including only 15% of under-25s.
- Mary, the mother of Jesus, was kept free from Original Sin at the time of her conception. Only 19% of Irish people knew this, including only 10% of under-25s.

Interesting use of the word “superstition”!!!
I’d love to know what some of the wrong answers were.

I surprised myself and got them all right, all credit due to the Dominicans! I’d even go so far as to say I found them easy questions. My daughter on the other hand, who is also schooled by Dominicans, would not have a clue.

It is also interesting how the answers are documented, i.e., “only”. I think its great that less and less people know these things - indirect indicator of the formation of a more secular society?
Not sure who this is attributable to - but I like it; “I am not superstitious myself, its bad luck” (sounds like a Groucho Marx comment)

Maybe these people worship Zeus?
1. Who was Zeus’s third wife?
2. Which demon did Zeus destroy in Halles?
3. What did Zeus break with his bear hands when he was 2 yrs old?
