Mahon Tribunal is Bertie Ahern’s Monica Lewinsky

October 1, 2007

Ahern 3 Monica Lewinsky

When Michael Wall gave Bertie Ahern financial relief in his office, neither of them noticed the stain they left on Ahern’s political legacy. Around the same time, Monica Lewinsky gave Bill Clinton a different kind of relief, but with a similar outcome. Here are five ways that the two affairs are alike: >>>

  • Both affairs involved legal acts between consenting adults in private.
  • Clinton thought his secret was safe, and Ahern though his safe was secret.
  • Both had got similar favours before, mostly from intimate friends.
  • Both blamed their behaviour on their marital problems.
  • Both were left with a permanent messy stain on their political legacies.

I did have a lot more explicit comparisons, including about stories that are hard to swallow, but I decided to tone it down a bit.
