Ireland on YouTube Part 1 - Belfast
August 12, 2007
This is the first in a series of meanders through Ireland as portrayed on YouTube. Let’s start with this sophisticated - and strangely appropriate - tribute to the Belfast Boy Georgie Best. It’s from YouTube user K2UGA. If you like it, there’s another version here.
The next four Belfast videos are just a click away - they include
- Cartoon hero Captain Planet trying to save Belfast
- American Jett Loe’s hilarious response to Captain Planet
- A video clip of Belfast in 1901
- Ali G visiting Belfast.

Captain Planet
You’ve got to look at both of the next two to get the full effect. First, here’s an edition of the 1990s Turner Corporation cartoon Captain Planet, in which our hero takes a few minutes off from saving the universe to save wee Belfast from sectarian violence.
Jett Loe, a Belfast-based American who who publishes a podcast called Letter to America, responded on YouTube by praising the above video for subtly capturing the pain and hatred of living in Belfast. Here’s his response. A number of people missed the irony of Jett’s response, with one replying that:
i hope i c u in my life u fucker so i can knock ur fuck in
Now here’s how Jett responded to this threat. And watch it to the end. It has a marvelous pay-off.
Belfast 1901
In case you’re confused by all of this, here is what Belfast is actually like. Or, at least, what it was like, in 1901.
Ali G visits Belfast
Finally, I’ve published this one already: Ali G visits Belfast. Check it!

Thanks for that, John.
As an aside, it has just dawned on me - maybe Captain Planet is Bertie Ahern.
