That’s Pirate Radio Part 4 – The Big Three
None of the listeners knew, but there was more than one law being broken at Radio Dublin. Eamon Cooke was later convicted of sexually abusing some of the many young girls who hung around his house and, when he went on holiday in April 1978, most of his DJs left having burned his transmitter. >>> (more…)

The Dark Days of Clontarf in the 1960s
I mentioned this in a comment on another post yesterday, so I thought I’d put up the full story today. John McGahern’s The Dark was banned in 1965. A primary school teacher on leave of absence, he was ‘advised’ not to return to his job in Clontarf. When he reported for duty, he was sacked. The parish priest said that not only had his writing caused trouble, but he had also got married in a registry office. >>> (more…)

That’s Pirate Radio Part 3 – Fighting the Law
When Doctor Don joined A.R.D. after his bust-up with Captain Cooke, both pirate crews started to fight a literal battle, sabotaging each other’s equipment. This climaxed in a head-on crash in the Phoenix Park between Cooke’s famous white 1958 Jaguar and Doctor Don’s more modest car. >>> (more…)
