Quiz - Irish Counties that are Scrabble Words

June 2, 2007

Six Irish County names are also allowable Scrabble words. Three are easy to guess, the other three harder. Answer just a click away. >>>

Easy Ones

  • Cork
  • Down
  • Limerick

Harder Ones

  • Derry
  • Kerry
  • Mayo

I assume that Mayo is short for Mayonnaise. I have no idea what Derry or Kerry mean, but they are listed in Official Scrabble Words International, which does not include definitions.

It reminds of a quote I read once about a Scrabble champion who ‘knows 16,000 words - or, at least, knows how to spell them.’

As mentioned above, if you like Irish football and/or cultural nostalgia, I also write Bionic Bohs, a blog about following Bohs in the 1970s.
